CGI Competition

Thursday 30 June 2022

Four teams of year 9 students took part in a STEM competition last Wednesday, following on from their work in PSHE with CGI, responding to specific briefs in order to innovate/produce solutions to specific issues using Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths skills.

The briefs included:

  • Making courtrooms accessible to less able people

  • Reducing the carbon footprint and encourage sustainability

  • Devising a charity event to Lords Cricket Club

  • Reducing negative externalities such as crime, alcohol consumption

The 16 students in the final attended a whole day of events at Lords Cricket Ground and competed against 2 other schools for the top prizes. Of our four teams, OPHS students won 3 categories:  Technology, Engineering, Maths!

All the students had put in a huge amount of hard work, to tight deadlines and they presented their ideas beautifully. The judges were all very impressed with their performance, integrity and thinking on the spot. The judges asked them some difficult questions about sustainability, government funding and resourcing issues. All groups were able to respond to their questions with confidence.

As prizes CGI will be giving OPHS

  • £500

  • £10 gift voucher for every student that won in the 3 groups

  • 2 x tickets for a match at Lord Cricket club for every student that attended.

A huge achievement for our year 9s and we look forward to a similar success story next year for our incoming year 9s!
