Supporting Your Child's Home Study

Welcome to the Oaks Park High School’s guide for supporting your child with their home study. At Oaks Park, we understand the vital role parents play in their children's education, and we want to ensure that you feel confident in helping your child succeed academically. This page provides practical advice and tips to support your child’s learning at home.

Supporting Homework: A Guide for Parents & Carers

By setting a specific time and place for homework, your child can develop a focused and efficient routine, making it easier for them to stay on track with their studies.

Choose a Consistent Time

  • Daily Routine: Set a specific time for homework each day. This could be immediately after school or after a short break. Aim for a time when your child is alert and not too tired.
  • Avoid Late Hours: Try to finish homework well before bedtime. This prevents stress and ensures they get a good night’s sleep.

  • Consider Other Commitments: Plan around extracurricular activities or family time, ensuring the homework time is uninterrupted.

Example:
Monday to Friday: 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM
Weekends: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Designate a Study Space

  • Quiet and Focused: Choose a location that is quiet and free from distractions, like a desk in the living room, study, or bedroom.

  • Comfortable Setup: Ensure the study area has a comfortable chair, a spacious desk, and good lighting.

  • Limit Distractions: Avoid areas near the TV or in busy parts of the house.

Keep mobile devices away unless they are required for the homework.

Example of an Ideal Study Space:

  • A well-lit desk or a quiet corner of the house.

  • A tidy area with necessary school materials (books, laptop, stationery) readily available.

Using School Systems to Support Your Child’s Homework

At Oaks Park High School, we provide several online platforms to help parents stay informed and support their child’s homework and academic progress. Here’s a guide to the key systems you can use:

Homework Planner
The Homework Planner is an essential tool that helps both students and parents stay organised with assignments. Here’s how you can make the most of it:

  • Check Daily: Encourage your child to update their planner with all homework assignments and deadlines.
  • Set Reminders: Use the planner to set reminders for due dates and upcoming assessments. This helps manage time effectively.
  • Monitor Progress: Regularly check the planner to see what work has been set and whether your child is keeping up with their tasks.

Google Classroom
Google Classroom is a virtual classroom where teachers set assignments, share resources, and provide feedback. It’s a great way to stay informed about your child’s tasks.

  • Track Assignments: Each subject will have its own Google Classroom where homework, class materials, and deadlines are posted.
  • Submit Work: Students can submit their assignments directly through Google Classroom, allowing you to see what tasks they’re working on.
  • How to Use: Make sure your child checks Google Classroom regularly. Ask you child to talk you through their assignments on Google Classroom.
By using these systems, you can stay informed about your child’s schoolwork and help them stay organised and focused on their academic success. If you need help accessing any of these platforms, please contact the school for assistance.
