The Oaks Park Travel Green Team
The OPHS Travel Green Team is a student led group which looks at issues of greener and safer travel to and from school.
We have been running for over 8 years now and in that time we have made lots of changes to way students and staff travel to and from school. Different events like Travel Green Fridays, Silent Protests, cycle to school week and through many competitions have promoted the importance of travelling to school in a sustainable manner.
Through the efforts of the Travel Green Team the team have now been awarded school of the region twice and currently hold the Gold level STAR Accreditation award from TFL. In addition to this the team has had the opportunity to work closely with TFL under their Youth Travel Ambassador programme and many other schools and travel teams in London boroughs.
The team continues to grow each year and is a great place for students to develop communication and presentation skills along with growing their confidence and working with students from other year groups.
We meet every Tuesday lunchtime at 1.30pm in E9, Miss Pugh, Miss Smith, Mrs Fage and Mr Chapman help run the team.
There is a special focus on cycling within the Travel green team, we have a bike polo team and cycling is now embedded into the PE curriculum. In addition students and staff have taken bikeability courses to improve their proficiency in cycling. There have also been a number of cycle trips to Redbridge cycling centre, the Olympic Velodrome and BMX centre and we will also be attending the opening event of Extra Cycle routes at Fairlop Waters.
